CSaLT is the Centre for Schooling and Learning Technologies (CSaLT) and is located in the School of Education (SoE) at Edith Cowan University (ECU) and is a Level II Research Centre.

Mission

To support activities of the School of Education at ECU that improve schooling in Western Australia and maximize the effective use of ICT to support teaching and learning in schools. These activities will include supporting the development of teaching and ICT-related skills and understandings with pre-service and practicing teachers, working directly with schools and school systems to improve schooling practices and the use of ICT to support learning and teaching, and will seek to add to knowledge in these areas through conducting relevant research.

Aims

The general aims of the Centre are to:

  1. Promote research into improving schooling and into the application of ICT to improve teaching and learning;
  2. Support the use of ICT by School of Education staff to support teaching and learning;
  3. Provide teacher professional learning; and
  4. Provide consulting services to schools and school systems

These aims are focused on improving learning outcomes through improving their experience of school and through the use of ICT. In many instances activities of the centre will occur in more than one area of operation as for example in the case of the tender for the evaluation of the 100 Schools Project for DET that included providing consulting services combined with conducting research.
The Centre will raise revenue from its activities to cover the costs of its activities and provide a return to the SoE to support its programmes.
The following sections discuss the activities of the Centre related to the four general aims of the Centre.

Research

The Centre will promote and become involved in conducting and disseminating research relevant to the use of ICT to support learning and teaching in schools. Activities will include:

  • Promotion of the application for research grants in areas concerned with improving schooling and the use of ICT to support teaching and learning.
  • Application for research grants, in particular collaborating with industry and University partners, in areas concerned with improving schooling and the use of ICT to support teaching and learning.
  • Seeding of areas of research and development considered critical to the work of CSaLT.

Consulting services to schools and school systems

The Centre will provide consulting services to schools and school systems in implementing, evaluating and researching the use of ICT to support learning. Activities will include:

  • Collaboration with schools and school systems on projects concerned with the use of ICT.
  • Submitting proposals to tenders available and concerned with the use of ICT in education.
  • Providing submissions to government and other enquiries concerned with the use of ICT in schools.

Support the use of ICT by School of Education staff to support teaching and learning

Activities are likely to include:

  • Support for and promotion of the use of ICT by SoE faculty in the delivery of programmes and units at ECU.
  • Provision of ICT technical support and advice to the SoE at ECU.

Teacher professional learning

The Centre will consider the potential for the support and/or delivery of teacher professional development in the use of ICT to support learning, in a variety of forms. Activities will include:

  • The provision of learning modules, seminars and conferences.
  • Involvement with teacher mentoring programmes.
